Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the role of the government has changed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Talking about a new approach to evidence-based policy making for drones, Scindia said that the government is acting as a facilitator and not a regulator.

Addressing the session on ‘Drones for Public Good – Mass Awareness Program’ organized by FICCI, Scindia said that it is important to promote technology and drone technology will bring the marginalized people at the center of development. He said that drones play an important role in connecting people from every nook and corner of the country.

Scindia said that India as a country has generally been a follower of innovation or development of technology. The Civil Aviation Minister said, this is the first time that we are thinking of becoming a leader in this field.

The new drone regulations include the PLI scheme for drones and are giving a big boost to the new domestic manufacturing industry. “The 40 percent value addition limit for this sector gives a unique advantage to a fresh start,” Scindia said.

He further mentioned that for any technology to be successful, there are three phases required – policy structuring, funding incentives and demand structuring. He further said that the Government of India’s scheme is planning to use drones to map thousands of villages which will boost India’s drone industry in a big way.
